Bringing the stories of Missouri to the forefront

Pieces that take a closer look

Schools across the U.S. are getting some much-needed upgrades from the COVID relief package known as the American Rescue Plan. That's true in Missouri, where the state legislature decided how to allocate the federal money just weeks before it was set to expire. But experts say fixing systemic funding gaps in the public education system will require long-term investment. Gabrielle Hays reports.

For the first time, the U.S. government released a report this month detailing the abuse and mistreatment of Native children who were forcibly sent to boarding schools in the 1800s. NewsHour’s St Louis community reporter Gabrielle Hays, who has been reporting on one school in Missouri that fits into this painful history, joins Geoff Bennett to discuss what she uncovered.

Stories you will never forget

As a journalist there are those stories that stick with you through the years, sources that’ll remain in your heart forever. We peak into the lives of people on some of the best and worst days in their worlds. One of my favorite things is asking people about the one story that changed them because it often teaches you a lot about the person behind the camera.

I did this story a while back and have since grown in my technique. However, the core, the movement and the depth of the story holds true. With that said, here’s the story of Sawyer Black. His life, his light and his legacy. Three things I will never forget.
